Hannibal
Hannibal, or “Hanni” as he is affectionately called by his friends here at the Verona Animal Hospital , is a 7 year old male castrated domestic short hair cat. He is dearly loved by the hospital staff and he “hangs out” with us in the kitchen during our lunch hour shifts – lounging on our laps, drinking water from the running faucet, and purring contently as he gets his daily dose of cuddle time.
Hannibal came to us in March, 2008 for chronic vomiting. His owner unfortunately gave him up and Dr. Scriff elected to take Hanni on as our hospital patient and make him better. Since March, he has been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease. This disease can cause vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss in the uncontrolled patient.
Luckily, Hanni has responded very well to therapy and no longer vomits. He is on two medications – prednisone and metronidazole, which he takes well. He will most likely need to be on these medications for life. In addition, Hanni’s calcium level is high and has to be controlled with a special diet. Again, his level responded very well to therapy and the calcium is now normal. This disease is found in cats and is called idiopathic hypercalcemia.
Hanni is doing very well on this treatment plan and loves the attention showered on him each day. But it is our sincerest hope that Hanni will find his forever-home because that is exactly what he needs most. While we will miss this loving and wonderful boy cat very much, we are asking that you help find him a loving home. Do you have room in your heart and home for Hanni or know someone else who does? If so, please let us know! Dr. Brazer will be more than happy to speak with you about him – she’s one of his big-time fans!
